Goodness Spotlight: Vital Beat Yoga

Gorgeous Kaye is the owner/director of Vital Beat Yoga

The merging of music and yoga is not a new concept, but the music chosen at Vital Beat is a special kind of fun. It makes you smile, laugh, and wiggle your hips in downward dog. It makes you tap your fingers on the mat, hum your favourite tune, and get lost in the beauty of the beat.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT WHAT YOU DO?

I used to think it was just about the yoga. Now I realise its about the connection. People should feel they belong, communities play such an important role in healing, and we simply help to facilitate that. Whether its attending our charity classes and yoga-ing for a cause, mama’s bonding over their growing bellies, students suggesting songs for our playlists or picking produce from our veggie beds after class; I opened as a yoga studio, and it evolved into everyones second home full of smiles, rad tunes, support, and connection. I love that we are a place with heart, we do things the way we do because music brings joy and yoga brings joy and why should they be mutually exclusive? I love what I do because I get to blur the lines between my vocation & my calling, between job & community, and between body & heart, just by unlocking the studio door.

WHAT ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT RIGHT NOW?

Right now, its about slowing down. I'm in pursuit of The Slow Life, as I’ve called it. Vital Beat has been a one woman show since day one, and we've just turned 1 year old - it has been a juggernaut of magic & opportunities that I could never have imagined. From website to software to marketing to PR to collaborations to graphic design to fitout to scheduling to staff management - plus teaching classes too! - I literally worked 60 hours a week for 12 months straight, often late at night after my toddler was in bed. When your work is your calling and your calling is your passion its very easy to blur the lines between work and life, so I am now on sabbatical! This post comes to you from Darwin in fact, where I am chilling after 9 days off road on the Gibb River route, reconnecting with my husband and my daughter, returning to Perth some time in September. My passion at THIS time, is to find space between the breaths, be playful, trust the process, connect with my loves, ground myself, and rise and sleep with the sun.
Fortunately, I have a kickass team of 13 and a manager back home, to run the studio, who love Vital Beat like their own.

WHAT’S YOUR NUMBER ONE LIFE LESSON YOU’VE LEARNED?

That the molds created for us by the world we grew up in are outdated and beige. Early as a teacher (and business owner) I feared being ridiculed or shunned for being an inauthentic version of a yogi. I drink coffee and wine, listen to rap, and suck at meditating. Worse, I worried my studio would flounder and fail. The more I stepped into & owned my ridiculous authentic self, the more the opposite happened. The studio was celebrated, incredible teachers joined our ranks, and a tight knit community flourished. Moulds are only made for breaking, use them as a platform for which to balance and take a breath, and then reach beyond. Every time I find myself thinking I SHOULD do this or that, I listen more intently to how I FEEL, and then adjust accordingly.

IF YOU COULD MAKE ONE POSITIVE CHANGE IN THE WORLD, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

It would be to endow all people to see themselves as their dog (or child) sees them. To see themselves as magic and empowered and beautiful and full of strength and light. So many of the worlds problems can be traced back to doubt, mistrust, loneliness, disconnection, disempowerment, hate, envy, and fear. These aren’t external things at all! Even though war and poverty and environmental destruction seem to be outside us, they come from a place within us. Imagine if everyone in the world thought they Were Enough and Had Enough… loved enough, beautiful enough, successful enough, safe enough…. there would be no more/less/us/them.

WHEN YOU’RE HAVING A HUMP DAY, HOW DO YOU TURN YOUR FROWN UPSIDE DOWN?

It 100% comes back to music. Maybe its one song or maybe its 10, I medicate with as many amazing tunes I need to bring myself into a new space. And they’re played LOUD (I installed surround sound at the studio for ultimate effect haha). I literally have playlists on Spotify called Happiness Is, Heart Chakra, or 100% Savasana - playlists ready for me when I need a shot of joy or confidence. Its not just about hip hop (although thats my true love) its about anything that has as much sass, heart, passion, or purpose, as I myself need in that moment. I am currently thrashing the album from Rag n Bone Man and his incredible guttural blues voice.
