First up, briefly tell us a bit about yourself and what you do!
I’m Nina, and I am a qualified Nutritionist (BHSc Nut) running my own nutrition clinic Naturally Nina in Dunsborough WA, where I do both in-person and online nutrition consults via Skype, and I help educate, guide and empower people from all over the world in eating to best fuel their bodies, understanding their unique needs, and forming a healthy relationship with food. I have a big passion for all things health, nutrition, fitness and wellbeing, which I share with the world through my Instagram @naturally_nina_ and blog www.naturally-nina.com, where I post plant based recipes, food inspiration and nutrition education, and ‘real talks’ about eating disorder recovery, mental health and more. I love what I do and I am so grateful that I get to do something I am so passionate about every single day!
What time do you wake up most days and how many hours of sleep do you aim for?
I get up at 5 am on weekdays, as training starts at 5:30am (I do CrossFit and train 6 days a week, which I absolutely love!). I am usually in bed my 10pm at the latest, if not earlier. In weekends I ‘sleep in’ until 6:30-7am!
What’s your morning routine to set you up for a great day?
After I get up (I never ever hit snooze!), I wash my face and put my training gear on. Then drink either a big glass of water or hot water with a few drops of LifeCykel cordyceps extract to hydrate my body before training.
After training, I always make myself a big, nourishing breakfast, then have a shower and get ready for the day before starting work – usually consults with clients, writing personalised meal plans, recipe testing or getting back to emails!
Describe a typical day of eating for you.
I am vegan and also coeliac, so I eat a mainly whole foods plant based diet that’s also gluten free. I absolutely love eating this way and the way it makes me feel, and it also allows me to maintain great blood sugar control (I am type 1 diabetic!).
Breakfast is usually my gluten free Bircher (made from rice or quinoa flakes) with berries, banana, hemp and flaxseeds, or a big smoothie bowl with bananas, mango, plant based protein, hemp seeds and some kind of toppings.
Lunch is a ‘Nourish Bowl’, which is basically leftovers from last night re-invented as a rainbow Buddha Bowl with lots of veggies and always a source of complex carbs, protein and healthy fats – if you follow me on Instagram you’ll be very familiar with these!
Dinner is always different, but always a wholesome, delicious plant based meal, such as baked sweet potato and bean chilli with salad and avo mash, or a lentil Dahl with roasted pumpkin and greens, or a marinated tempeh and veggie str fry with quinoa…yum!
I also have at least 2-3 snacks every day, being very active I have a high energy requirement and always ensure my body has the fuel and nutrients it needs so I not only feel my best but perform and recover well too! Snacks vary from homemade bliss balls or a healthy baked good, smoothies, fruit with chia pudding or nuts, hummus and veggies on rice cakes…
I share all my recipes on my Instagram and blog, and I also have an Ebook coming out very very soon filled with all of my favourite whole foods recipes, and a wealth of information on plant based nutrition and learning to nourishing your body, mind and soul. I’m very excited to share it with the world!!
Tell us about your daily beauty routine! What are your non-negotiables for looking and feeling your best?.
I’m very very basic when it comes to beauty. I truly believe looking good starts with taking good care of your body through eating a wholesome diet filled with an abundance of nutrient-dense plant foods, drinking enough water, sleeping well and being active in a way you enjoy!
I don’t use many products on my skin or wear much make up, apart from a coat of mascara maybe, but my go-to moisturiser, skin soother and hair glosser has to be good old coconut oil!!
What’s your fitness routine & favourite way to get sweaty and where’s your go-to?
I train at The Movement Fitness and Wellbeing in Dunsborough which is a CrossFit-style gym, where I also have my office. I absolutely love training there, and the people are basically family! I train 6 days a week, doing a mix of strength and conditioning, gymnastics, Olympic Lifting and boxing, and although it’s tough, I love everything about it. I’ve been a competitive athlete all my life but only recently got hooked on CrossFit, and am about to compete in my second CrossFit competition in a few weeks time!
Other than training, I also love doing some active recovery outdoors like swimming, running or just walking my dog at the beach!
What’s the one beauty or wellness treatment you can’t live without? And your favourite place to have it done?
I absolutely LOVE massages. Proper deep tissue sports massages that get right into your muscles and almost hurt but leaving you feeling like a brand new person afterwards! We have a really great remedial massage therapist at The Movement – Joyce Remedial, which is my go-to.
